Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama, experienced record high temperatures for two consecutive days. Cooler temperatures are expected to arrive by Thursday.

Published: Dec. 18, 2024, 6:19 p.m.Two Alabama cities had record high temperatures for the second day in a row, according to the National Weather Service. Mobile broke its record high for the second straight day, and Montgomery tied its record, also for the second straight day. Mobile’s high was 78 degrees on Wednesday, breaking the old record of 77 degrees reached in 1967 and 2006.Montgomery had a high temperature on Wednesday of 79 degrees, which tied the record last reached in 1984.

That could be the last record warmth for a while. Colder air was working its way into the state from the north as of Wednesday night, and Thursday will be a much colder day, according to weather service forecasts. Highs on Thursday will only reach the lower 50s in north Alabama, according to the weather service. The northern part of central Alabama will peak in the 50s for highs, but the southern part of the region could reach the 60s. South Alabama is expected to have highs in the mid-60s. Colder temperatures are in the forecast through the weekend, but they are expected to warm up some next week as Christmas approaches
