A new bill in Alabama seeks to require all public places to install adult-sized changing tables, addressing the lack of accessible facilities for adults with disabilities. The bill, sponsored by State Senator Arthur Orr, was prompted by the experiences of parents and caregivers who face the daily challenges of finding appropriate places to change their loved ones.

State Senator Arthur Orr sponsored a bill to require all public places in Alabama to install adult-sized changing tables after hearing from caregivers and parents of disabled individuals. The bill, driven by the need for accessible facilities for adults with disabilities, was prompted by the experiences of parents like Amanda Dixon, whose son Joseph requires assistance with changing following an injury.

Dixon highlighted the lack of appropriate facilities, stating that families are often forced to change adults in unsanitary conditions, such as on the floor or in the back of their cars, which can lead to embarrassment and inconvenience. She shared an instance where she was confronted by the police for changing her son in her car due to the absence of changing tables. Dixon emphasized that this lack of accessibility restricts families from fully engaging in social activities and outings. Lynn Bates, an Occupational Therapist in Huntsville, corroborated Dixon's concerns, stating that families frequently complain about the lack of changing spaces in public areas. Bates stressed that this issue significantly impacts the lives of families with disabled members, limiting their ability to participate in community events and activities. The bill aims to address this disparity by mandating the installation of height-adjustable adult-sized changing tables in all public places. Proponents argue that these facilities will make it easier for caregivers to change adults with disabilities, promoting their dignity and independence. June Wilson, Co-chair for changing spaces, has a four-year-old child with autism who requires an adult changing table. Inspired to create change, she reached out to Senator Orr for assistance in sponsoring the bill. Wilson underscored the universality of disability, stating that anyone can become part of this minority group at any time. She believes that this issue affects everyone and that providing accessible facilities benefits the entire community. The bill has garnered widespread support and passed unanimously in the Finance and Taxation Education committee. Wilson envisions a more inclusive society where families with disabled members can comfortably participate in public activities without facing the challenges of finding appropriate changing facilities. The bill's passage signifies a significant step towards creating a more welcoming and accessible environment for all individuals
