Alabama AD Greg Byrne spoke exclusively with AL.com about the College Football Playoff rankings, how the school views scheduling in light of the selection committee's rankings.
The winners and losers from the penultimate rankings released Tuesday created a grease fire on social and traditional media. Alabama, clearly, was the winner at No. 11, theoretically the last at-large team in the field.
But there has to be winners and losers. And as a member of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection committee, Byrne said he can relate with the difficult decisions made by the 13-member CFP committee. That experience influences how Byrne views the current discussion. The Crimson Tide has two Power 4 non-conference games scheduled every season through 2034 with a trip to Florida State and home date with Wisconsin set for 2025.
Given that the CFP committee isn’t penalizing one-loss power conference teams with weak schedule strengths, Byrne said he hasn’t rethought the aggressive scheduling strategy. All of that is for future seasons and the unknown with how the playoff will be structured and selected when the current contracts end after next season.
