A U. S. District Court in Alabama granted a preliminary injunction on Tuesday that blocks an Alabama law that would ban almost all abortions in the state.
was approved by the Alabama Senate and signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey on May 15 and was set to go into effect next month. The law bans abortion at every stage of pregnancy and criminalizes the procedure for doctors who could be sentenced to 99 years in prison for completing an abortion and a minimum of 10 years for attempting one. There is an exception for cases in which the mother’s life is at serious risk, but not for rape or incest.
“Once again, the courts have affirmed that we have a right to access safe, legal abortion. Politicians in Alabama, and across the country, are putting people’s health and lives at risk in their attempts to ban abortion outright in this country,” Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America,in a statement. “Today’s victory means that people can still access the health care they need across Alabama — for now.
