Rev. Al Sharpton, during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day rally, urged a boycott of companies abandoning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, arguing that these actions amounted to a rollback of civil rights. He pledged to identify two companies for a targeted boycott after a months-long investigation into corporations moving away from DEI and their profitability.
MSNBC's Rev. Al Sharpton issued a call for a boycott of companies dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ) initiatives, claiming they are attempting to relegate Black individuals to a position of second-class citizenship. Sharpton conveyed this message during a rally commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C., grounding his call in the legacy of King as a civil rights advocate.
He asserted that DEI programs were implemented as a remedy to the systemic racial bias ingrained in academic institutions and corporate structures. 'Why do we have DEI? We have DEI because you denied us diversity, you denied us equity, you denied us inclusion. DEI was a remedy to the racial institutionalized bigotry practice in academia and in these corporations. Now, if you want to put us back in the back of the bus, we going to do the Dr. King-Rosa Parks on you,' Sharpton declared.Sharpton announced that his organization, the National Action Network, will conduct an in-depth, months-long investigation into companies abandoning DEI policies and their subsequent financial performance. Following the completion of this study, they intend to target two specific companies for a boycott. 'In 90 days, we are going to announce the two companies that we’re going after, and we’re going to ask everybody in this country — Black, white, brown, gay, straight woman, trans — don’t buy where you are not respected,' Sharpton stated. His call to action follows a trend among several prominent companies, including Walmart, McDonald's, Ford, Meta, and others, announcing plans to scale back or altogether eliminate DEI initiatives. Sharpton encouraged his supporters to patronize companies that remain committed to upholding DEI policies, citing Costco as an example.
