Denny McCarthy erased a six-stroke deficit on the back nine to force a playoff, but Akshay Bhatia prevailed to earn a Masters berth.

Ten years ago, on the final Sunday before the Masters Tournament, Akshay Bhatia was among the inaugural group of participants in the Drive , Chip and Putt national finals — a youth skills competition at Augusta National . He finished sixth in the age 12-13 group, but more important was the chance to stand on the stage of his dreams.

He chipped in a 14-yard shot on 15, and when he rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on 16, Bhatia’s lead was down to a single stroke. McCarthy drew even on 17, calmly draining a 3-foot putt for birdie as Bhatia missed from just more than 5 feet and had to save par. McCarthy converted a 12-foot, 6-inch putt for birdie on 18, and Bhatia matched from 11 feet, 6 inches, sending the Texas Open to a playoff at 20-under.
