The family of four red wolves that now call the Akron Zoo home include Diego and Brave and their two pups, Sentinel and Sabine.
The zoo on Thursday announced the addition of Diego and Brave and their two pups, Sentinel and Sabine . The wolves are currently in the zoo’s red wolf habitat. The zoo has installed window coverings in the exhibit to help the wolves adjust to their new home and it will slowly remove the coverings, according to a Facebook post.
Red wolves used to be found from southeastern Texas to central Pennsylvania, but years of hunting and habitat loss all but eliminated the species by 1970. Today the species is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species as there are fewer than 20 red wolves remaining in their native habitat.
The zoo closed its red wolf habitat for the summer for renovations and to expand the exhibit’s private yard, which will offer more space for breeding red wolves in the future.
