Akron's men's basketball team secured a convincing victory against Central Michigan in their opening home game of the Mid-American Conference season. Seth Wilson led the charge with a career-high performance, while the Zips' fast-paced offense and tough defense proved too much for the Chippewas to handle.
The Akron men’s basketball team defeated Central Michigan 87-71 in their Mid-American Conference home opener on Tuesday night at James A. Rhodes arena. Akron’s Seth Wilson led the team with a career-high 18 points, including six 3-pointers. Shammah Scott and Nate Johnson added 14 and 13 points respectively. Tavari Johnson, Isaiah Gray, and Sharron Young also scored double digits with 12, 11, and 12 points. Akron led 41-38 at halftime and continued their strong performance in the second half.
Seth Wilson continued his hot shooting from deep and the Zips maintained a comfortable lead to close out the game. “When we’re playing a tough team we set the tone early and be tougher than they were,” Scott said. “Limit their 3s. Not a lot of teams can keep up with our movement and how fast we play. “Even though we’re undersized in a lot of positions, we have a lot of toughness and that’s all you need.” Kyler VanderJagt led Central Michigan with 20 points and Anthony Prichard added 13. The Zips are now 2-0 in the MAC and 9-5 overall. They opened conference play with a 71-68 win on the road against Bowling Green Friday night. Central Michigan is now 0-2 in the MAC and 6-8 overall. CMU fell to Ohio University 57-55 in its MAC opener Sunday. Tuesday’s game marked the 56th meeting between Akron and Central Michigan. The Zips hold a 41-15 advantage against CMU and have won the past eight home games
