Akron police, fire department and school district officials conducted an active shooter drill to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
AKRON , Ohio - Akron police, fire department and school district officials conducted an active shooter drill to prepare for the worst-case scenario. The simulation included fake guns, actors portraying victims and paramedics responding to the scenario.
“We’re trying to recreate that so that this is a real life, realistic situation, as realistic as possible, so that in the event that our officers ever have to respond to something like this, it’s like they’ve been there before,” said Lt. Michael Murphy of the Akron Police Department. Media were not allowed inside during the exercise but could observe the aftermath of the scenario.
“We hope to never have to be here, but mentally we would have gone through a number of reps in our minds and recreated this scenario multiple times over before we have to do it in real life,” Murphy said. Akron Public Schools Superintendent Mary Outley said the district is working to prevent an active shooter situation from happening in the first place, but wants parents to know they are prepared.
“We want them to have the reassurance to know that if something were to happen, we are rehearsing how to address it so that we are prepared,” Outley said. Alan Jones, Akron Public Schools safety and security official, said the district will do whatever it takes to protect students. Students and teachers will practice active shooter drills during the first week of school in the fall, similar to tornado and fire drills.
