The city is working on plans for Phase 2 of the trail, which will extend Phase 1 through Akron’s Middlebury neighborhood. Once the entireis complete, it will connect seven Akron neighborhoods: Goodyear Heights, Middlebury, University of Akron, Downtown Akron, Firestone Park, Summit Lake and Kenmore. The trail offers Akronites an alternate way to access parks, grocery stores, libraries, churches and other amenities.

Phase 1 of the trail cost approximately $2 million, according to the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition. The 10-foot-wide asphalt trail includes wayfinding signage, two rail-to-pedestrian bridge conversions, interpretive signage, miniature neighborhood trail plazas, benches and street crossings. The trail also includes conduits for future fiber optic network expansion, according to the release.
