Simbine crafted a flawless season, navigated the preliminary rounds with care, avoided the pitfall of false starting in the semi-final as he did at last year’s World Championships, and performed admirably in an unprecedented Olympic 100m race where all eight finalists finished under 10 seconds. He ran the fastest race of his life, clocking a personal best and setting a new national record at 9.82 seconds.Despite these incredible efforts, the elusive medal remained out of reach.
Critics might fault his dip at the finish, but in such a competitive race, with the last finisher clocking 9.91 seconds, there was little more he could have done.After the race, Simbine acknowledged the support of South Africans and the historical significance of his achievement, despite not winning a medal. He emphasised the importance of inspiring the next generation of South African sprinters.
