Hearing from an expert in federal policy, the committee tried to get at the heart of how the state became non-compliant with federal policy, and what they can do about it.

Published: Apr. 4, 2024 at 5:18 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - As Alaska potentially faces a $425 million shortfall in federal education funding, the Senate Education Committee held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, April 3 to learn about the state’s options to avoid the loss.

This policy was enacted in March 2021 as part of the American Rescue Plan Act . It allowed for states to cut overall funding for education and still receive ARPA funds, as long as they do not disproportionally cut funds from a district with a high population of low-income families. However, Reid argues that a for a couple of reasons, states were put in a position where it was difficult to follow these guidelines.

However, Democrat Senator Loki Tobin noted this increase was not, to her knowledge, on a per student basis, saying, “We know that we didn’t have a Base Student Allocation increase in either of those years, so I’m going to assume this is on debt relief, major maintenance spending, not anything that actually went to the per-pupil spending but particularly to other entities.”
