We spoke to CriminalMindsEvolution star AJ Cook about her reaction to the season finale's wildest twists, her thoughts on JJ's growth since CriminalMinds and relationship with Will, and her hopes for season 2 (or 17?):
As Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1 comes to a close, AJ Cook opens up about her reaction to the finale and JJ's own character growth. Over the course of 10 episodes on Paramount+, the hit onetime CBS procedural has upped the stakes with a season-long case that found the Behavioral Analysis Unit tracking the mastermind of a serial killer network.
AJ Cook: You know, these two have been through so much together, it's really quite comical if you step back and look at the full show of Criminal Minds to see what all of our characters have been through. Yeah, poor JJ's been in peril so many times, just as the other characters have too. Spence[r Reid] has been in trouble so many times and Kirsten [Vangsness] - Garcia. I think we've all been killed a couple of times and come back to life.
And it's been so fun to see how JJ has definitely evolved a lot, as I have as a human. As we all have. It would be weird if she didn't ever change in these almost twenty years of doing the show. She's probably evolved a little bit more than some of the other characters, but that's because she didn't start out as a profiler. She left and then came back, and we really saw a big shift in JJ when she got pregnant and had her kids.
AJ Cook: Oh, I love that you just said that! Thank you, that's so sweet. That's what it's all about, right? I love to hear stuff like that because, like I said earlier, I've drawn so much strength and motivation from her, and I know that audience members have as well. I think it's so cool that we have been able to see her journey; the ups and the downs, and the highs and the lows, and the pain and the tears and the joy. We've been able to see it all.
AJ Cook: Oh, yeah. I know. I can't wait to hear audience reactions to it. I think there's going to be a lot of curse words going around. Like, “Are you effing kidding me? That's how you're going to leave us, going to leave us hanging like that?” It really does spawn a lot of conversation of who you think is opening that door and where this is going to next. The story is not over yet.
