It was a stacked agenda for the Austin ISD Board of Trustees Thursday as students get ready to return to school, including an update on a possible tax rate incr
ease to help address the district’s $119 million deficit.
To provide some much-needed relief, the district is asking the Board of Trustees to consider a Voter Approval Tax Rate Election or VATRE. If approved by voters in November, it would bring an additional $40 million annually in exchange for an average tax hike of $400 per year for residents. The additional revenue would help the district stave off additional cuts, and bring a compensation package that would help raise salaries to the market level.
