Airports around the world are transforming the passenger experience by incorporating carefully curated music into their terminals. From live performances to bespoke playlists, airports are using music to create a more enjoyable and engaging atmosphere for travelers.
Many airports are incorporating music into the passenger experience. This summer, Heathrow Airport in London built stages to showcase emerging British performers for the first time, a program so successful the airport hopes to bring it back in 2025. Nashville International Airport has five stages that host more than 800 performances per year, ranging from country musicians to jazz combos.
Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic greets passengers with live merengue music, with one young traveler commenting on how the music can uplift moods during travel delays. Airports are also curating specific recorded playlists. Detroit Metro Airport plays Motown hits in a tunnel connecting its terminals, while Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas has a playlist of local artists compiled by a local radio station. Singapore’s Changi Airport commissioned a special piano accompaniment for its giant digital waterfall. Music isn't new in airports, with Brian Eno's 'Music for Airports' album from 1978 influencing the ambient music genre. However, technology allows for more tailored and specific musical experiences. Mood Media, a company that provides music for airports and other public spaces, develops playlists to appeal to different demographics, like business travelers or families, depending on who's in the airport at any given time. They also consider the time of day, playing calming music in security lines and more energizing music in duty-free stores.
