According to the most recent federal dataset available, airlines damaged or misplaced 903 wheelchairs and scooters in April, more than 1 out of every 100 devices they handled.Summertime is synonymous with travel for many Americans. In fact, it was reported earlier this year that about 63% of U.S. adults had plans to travel this summer season.

Tight airplane cabins and airline delays often make travel uncomfortable, but for many Americans in wheelchairs, travel can be downright miserable. They can’t take their own wheelchairs into the cabin and must be transferred to smaller wheelchairs to board the plane. According to the most recent federal dataset available,

, more than 1 out of every 100 devices they handled. For comparison, airlines mishandled 0.55% of 39.8 million bags that same month.Damaged or lost wheelchairs and scooters are more than inconveniences for travelers who depend on those devices to get around. Many wheelchairs are customized and can cost tens of thousands of dollars.When airlines mishandle wheelchairs, travelers have little recourse. They can complain to the slow bureaucracy in the U.S.
