A first-year award given to distinguished future teacher Annie Arnott was found in a local bookstore with pressed flowers still in the pages
Airdrie Academy staff turned the pages of history as they uncovered the oldest story so far in the school’s 175th anniversary project – as they were presented with a prized 19th-century book awarded to a distinguished former pupil and staff member.
It was presented to the 12-year-old pupil in June 1896 at the end of the academic year, with a printed bookplate bearing the name of Academy rector Hugh Manners MA BSc showing that it was awarded as a second prize in the secondary department for her achievements in English and for coming second in her classes in both French and German.
Annie was a member of the Airdrie Academy former pupils’ club and attended the school’s evening art classes throughout her university years; and after graduating, was appointed as assistant languages teacher at her old school. Principal Flora Tebb wrote: “It is difficult indeed to express all that Miss Arnott has meant to the school – has given a lifetime of devotion the influence of her character and of her teaching has left a deep mark on its life.
