Health officials say the air in New Jersey could reach unhealthy levels for some residents on Monday.

The “code orange” alerts, activated by the state Department of Environmental Protection, advise residents that the air quality might reach unhealthy levels for certain groups of people, like children, older adults and anyone suffering from asthma, lung disease or other respiratory ailments.

The alert went into effect around 12:30 p.m. in the state’s northeastern region and shortly before 1 p.m. across the rest of New Jersey, effective until midnight.Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors.
