Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall plans to enter the cockpit of an AI-operated warplane to see how it performs in the air. He will be accompanied by a pilot who will observe the autonomous technology in action.
Drone warfare has quickly expanded from the sidelines of combat to one of its primary weapons. Drones are a daily threat in Ukraine and in the Middle East, and later this spring its top civilian leader plans to climb into an artificial intelligence-operated warplane and let it take him airborne.
Nine humanoid robots gathered at the ‘AI for Good’ conference in Geneva, Switzerland, where organizers are seeking to make the case for artificial intelligence to help resolve some of the world’s biggest challenges. The service has been tight-lipped on what the fleet of drones will look like in size or platform, whether they will be full-size warplanes or something smaller. Kendall said the converted F-16 test flight will be done for him to observe the technology behind the future fleet.
The Air Force requested $559 million in the 2025 budget to continue research and development of the future CCA air system.
