Capt. John Robertson of the 80th Operations Support Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base died of his injuries.

This image provided by the U.S. Air Force shows a U.S. Air Force T-6A Texan II taxiing down the flight line at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas , in January. The Air Force says an instructor pilot was killed when the ejection seat activated while the plane was still on the ground at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas .WICHITA FALLS, Texas — An instructor pilot with the Air Force has died after the ejection seat in the plane he was in activated while the aircraft was on the ground.

“This is a devastating loss for Capt. Robertson’s family and loved ones, and for the entire 80th Flying Training Wing,” Col. Mitchell Cok, the acting wing commander, said in a statement. “Capt. Robertson was a highly valued airman and instructor pilot. Our deepest condolences go with all who knew and loved him.”

Robertson was in a T-6A Texan II aircraft when the seat ejected. The T-6A Texan II is a single-engine two-seater aircraft that serves as a primary trainer for Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps pilots. In a training flight an instructor can sit in the front or back seat; both have lightweight Martin-Baker ejection seats that are activated by a handle on the seat.

In 2022, the T-6 fleet and hundreds of other Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps jets were grounded after inspections revealed a potential defect with one component of the ejection seat’s cartridge actuated devices, or CADs. The fleet was inspected and in some instances the CADs were replaced. An interim safety board is investigating the incident and a full Air Force Safety Investigation Board is expected to be in place later this week, the news release said.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
