Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart is only the second general in Air Force history to face a court-martial. Opening statements in his trial will begin today.
Air Force Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart , charged with raping a female subordinate, pleaded guilty Monday to lesser charges on the opening day of his court-martial at Fort Sam Houston . Stewart pleaded guilty to extramarital sexual conduct and dereliction of duty, both violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The guilty plea did not affect the other charges against him: sexual assault and conduct unbecoming an officer.
What to know about the rape case against Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart Stewart's potential punishment for the offenses to which he pleaded guilty ranges from a reprimand and fine to up to 18 months in jail. The remaining charges carry much heavier penalties upon conviction, including up to 20 years for each of two counts of sexual assault. Stewart is a former commander of the San Antonio-based 19th Air Force, which oversees all pilot training.
