United States Air Force assignment at Ramstein Air Base offered immersion in the culture and life of a German village.
The knock on the front door was faint. When I opened it, no one was there. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a wicker basket on the tiled floor. I folded the two handles down and lifted the thatched lid, and the aroma of roast beef and gravy rose into the air. A white cloth covered three plates of warm food. Silverware was wrapped in white linen napkins. There was no note, but I knew who’d brought us dinner — our landlord, Frau Strauss .
Air Force class on race relations opened eyes to others’ cultures She’d heard my wife Diane was on bed rest after surgery at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, and for the next week, she delivered hot meals to our front door. Her daughter Anya, who lived upstairs, confirmed her mother had delivered the basket.
We were young airmen at Ramstein Air Base — very young. But there was an adult in the room. The apartment sat off the curve of a cul-de-sac beyond the main street of the village. A stone-walkway cemetery, kept pristine by villagers, edged a country lane that stretched to the next town. I often jogged on that path, taking in the panoramic view of the rolling, green countryside.
From Diana Ross to Willie Nelson: Walls of sound united airmen at Lackland dormitory in the ’70s Anya introduced us to another beverage during the Christmas season. In the winter we’d sit in the stairwell, talking with her and neighbors, sipping hot Glühwein, which is a German spiced wine, laced with oranges, cinnamon and cloves. We still stock up on the mulled wine during winter holidays.
