Led by AI scientist Raquel Urtasun , the Canadian tech company aims to begin operating driverless semis in Texas in 2025. Backers include Uber , Khosla Ventures, Nvidia , Volvo and Porsche.Come 2025 AI-driven semis could be hauling commercial cargo in Texas. That’s the timeline Waabi , an autonomous driving startup led by AI scientist Raquel Urtasun , has set for itself with $200 million in fresh capital.

The pace of development for autonomous vehicles has been slower than many advocates anticipated a decade ago and achieved mixed results. In addition to the failed robot trucking startups, billions of dollars were pumped into other companies that folded, like the Ford-Volkswagen venture Argo AI; were sold off, like Uber’s ATG unit where Urtasun was once chief scientist; or had big setbacks, like General Motors’ Cruise robotaxi unit.

With the latest round, Waabi has raised more than $280 million. While that’s far less than competitors like Aurora, which is also preparing to begin commercial deliveries with driverless trucks, Urtasun thinks her approach is far less costly to develop and maintain.
