“The rollout of AI is coming hard and fast: not just for writers, actors, and musicians but for everybody.” jedgarlopez, a member of the WGA’s AI working group, reflects on screenwriting in the age of artificial intelligence:
Key to their claim is that AI learns “like humans.” That when ChatGPT bounces your prompt off the entire history of writing, now re-encoded and stored in its training weights, it is “transforming” that work, like a human. But better! After all, don’t writers just “learn” by reading and copying too? Isn’t that how we “organic LLMs” generate our “output”?writing? One must be humble. The math behind LLMs is eye-popping: That’s why even their makersthem.
Of course, when it suits their purposes, Google and OpenAI are quick to point out that these are just, the SAT, and the LSAT, but if passing the LSAT were a sufficient measure of humanity…well, insert your favorite lawyer joke here. As their novelty fades, we’re all beginning to interact with LLMs enough to feel their lack of humanity.
So what is it I do when I write? For starters, I don’t read the whole history of human text. Nor am I powered by gigawatts of computing power.
Because writing is communication. Writing is connection. A writer makes their thoughts echo in another’s head. Whether it’s poetry, ad copy, or emails to your mom, good writingwith its audience. Even in something as pragmatic as a screenplay, a writer conjures a “vision” in someone else’s head, enlisting their imagination to make it real.
All that matters is what you want to say. Everything else is style. Whether it’s a dick joke, an action sequence, or a yearning silence between lost souls, a writer—any artist, really—adds something meaningful to their work: themselves. That’s how we “transform” what we’ve “learned.” We add meaning. Our meaning. However advanced they become, LLMs will never know about truth or meaning. Meaning in art always comes from humans, from having something to say, from needing to connect.
