A quarter-century later, a flood of sophisticated deepfakes created with powerful generative AI-enabled applications are making it increasingly difficult—in real life—to tell what is genuine and what is phony.

The New York Times periodically posts online tests that ask users to see if they can tell what AI-generated content is and is not.
Many existing AI-enabled applications can create convincing fakes and many new AI applications that will soon become available will make it even easier. These upcoming apps includeMany of these applications encourage users to “create responsibly,” and some platforms have implemented new rules in an attempt to control AI content.
