How AI data centers are causing unexpected impacts, from filling campgrounds with construction workers to sparking widespread community opposition across the U.S.
The expansion of artificial intelligence data centers across the United States is creating unexpected consequences for local communities, extending beyond the well-documented issues of massive energy consumption, water usage, and noise pollution.
One surprising impact is evident in the recreational sector, as AI construction workers increasingly occupy campgrounds near national parks and other natural attractions. For instance, at Unhitched Sleepy Hollow RV Park in eastern Iowa, regular campers seeking to reserve spaces for the Fourth of July holiday found the campground at full capacity. According to Stephanie Chrisman, the park's manager, this is due to the influx of workers from nearby AI projects who are using the sites as temporary, long-term housing.
This trend is not isolated; similar situations are occurring at campgrounds throughout regions where data centers are under development. These facilities, which are far less expensive than local hotels-often costing only a fraction of the price-provide a practical solution for the influx of construction labor.
While this occupancy offers a financial boost to campgrounds that typically experience lower demand during off-season months, it also underscores the broader housing affordability crisis and illustrates how AI infrastructure can disrupt local life in unforeseen ways. The interference extends well beyond campgrounds. Data centers demand enormous quantities of electricity and potable water for cooling, straining local utilities and ecosystems. The noise generated by powerful cooling systems and backup generators has been documented to disturb both residents and wildlife.
These cumulative impacts have fueled growing public opposition. A May 2026 poll revealed that approximately 70 percent of Americans oppose the construction of data centers in their communities, with nearly half expressing strong opposition, a sentiment that cuts across political party lines. In the Midwest, where well over 1,000 data centers are currently operating, under construction, or planned, community resistance has become a significant force.
Protests and organized opposition have reportedly blocked at least $130 billion worth of planned projects in the first quarter of 2026 alone. While such efforts have succeeded in halting or delaying some facilities, they offer little relief to those already living near active sites.
A proposed Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rule to assess grid impacts represents a step toward addressing these issues, but it does not compel AI companies to bear the full cost of the environmental and social damages associated with their facilities
