A common complaint about modern action movies, especially the ones that are made exclusively for streaming platforms, is that they have a homogenous look. Tech mandates at streaming platforms enforce strict rules on filmmakers about what they can and cannot do, and most of them have to comply.
For instance, the recent action movie The Rip would've probably looked a lot different had it been released during the era that it pays homage to, the late '90s and the early aughts. This was when the late director, Tony Scott, had fully developed his signature style, and was delivering movies such as Crimson Tide and Man on Fire. Scott's career came to a tragic, untimely end in 2012, but his last film, Unstoppable, is arguably his best. And it'll soon be available to watch at home on Hulu. Released in 2010, the movie reunited Scott with his favorite star, Denzel Washington, who was paired alongside newly-minted Captain Kirk, Chris Pine. The two played mismatched railway engineers who take it upon themselves to stop a runaway train carrying explosive material, and avert a disaster. Produced on a reported budget of $100 million, Unstoppable earned over $165 million at the global box office. The movie earned excellent reviews, and is now sitting at a"certified fresh" 87% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"As fast, loud, and relentless as the train at the center of the story, Unstoppable is perfect popcorn entertainment -- and director Tony Scott's best movie in years." 'Unstoppable' Relied on Top Actors To Elevate Its Action Washington went on to headline the hit The Equalizer trilogy, which is set to get at least two new installments after grossing nearly $500 million in combined global box office revenue. Pine, on the other hand, appeared as the lead in two further Star Trek movies, after which he played a supporting role in the critically acclaimed blockbuster Wonder Woman. Unstoppable also featured Rosario Dawson in a supporting role, before she became involved in the Netflix superhero shows Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and played the lead role in the Disney+ live-action Ahsoka series.
