The report details a yearslong Israeli covert operation to groom Ahmadinejad as an intelligence asset with the goal of installing him as Iran's leader. Israel secretly provided him with money for housing and travel, and operatives met him abroad multiple times. This revelation is striking given Ahmadinejad's history of accelerating Iran's nuclear program, calling for Israel's destruction, and denying the Holocaust.
The operation culminated in February during the early days of the US-Israeli war on Iran, with an audacious attempt to relocate him. On February 28, an Israeli airstrike targeted Ahmadinejad's compound in Tehran, aiming at his bodyguards' building and his armored vehicle. After the strike, a black Peugeot arrived, driven by Mossad agents, who whisked him away to a secret safe house in Iran. Ahmadinejad reportedly became disillusioned with the chaotic rescue and Mossad's plan to return him to power.
He later left the safe house under unclear circumstances and reappeared publicly only last Monday at the funeral for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Four senior Iranian officials claim the IRGC intelligence wing has taken him into custody and placed him under house arrest after learning the full extent of his interactions with Israel. Israel has not commented on the mission to install Ahmadinejad, which was part of a broader regime-change effort.
A second element involved training and arming Iranian Kurdish opposition forces in northern Iraq to cross into western Iran and eventually move toward Tehran, but that effort never materialized. A former head of Israeli military intelligence, Tamir Hayman, confirmed on PBS that a sequence of special operations was planned, with Ahmadinejad as a key component.
The operation also included a 2024 trip to Budapest, where a university hosted a fake climate change conference as a cover for Ahmadinejad to meet Israeli intelligence operatives. The rector, Professor Gergely Deli, agreed despite concerns about reputational damage. The then-Mossad chief, David Barnea, personally met Ahmadinejad in Budapest, after which Mossad informed the CIA of the discussions
