“Today we received the heartbreaking news that we’ve lost two beautiful souls from our community and we’d like to give our condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of Luke Davies and Jesse Baird.”Both men had recently moved to Sydney for work. Baird, a television presenter, had settled in Paddington, while Davies, a Qantas flight attendant, was in Waterloo.
Addressing the group, Sydney independent MP Alex Greenwich acknowledged the impact of the “tragic news of the past 48 hours”, lamenting it was “taking too damn long for NSW to become a safe place for the LGBTQ community”.“There is a very strong sense of grief among Sydney’s LGBTQ community,” Greenwich said after the memorial.
“The NSW Police Force’s participation in, and support for, Mardi Gras is an important demonstration of our ongoing commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community,” they said.
