A house was recently set ablaze in Desa Jaya, Kepong by an individual believed to be an ah long. This incident occurred after the son of the house owners, who were believed to be the parents of the ah long's borrower, died under mysterious circumstances. The perpetrator was caught on CCTV footage throwing a Molotov cocktail into the house before leaving the scene while recording the fire. Public outrage has ensued, criticizing the government's lack of action against the rampant issue of ah long.

Illegally operating lenders, known as ' ah long ' are becoming a popular choice for some individuals due to their ease of access compared to registered institutions like banks. However, as is widely known, individuals who fail to repay loans from ah long often face serious consequences. The issue becomes more problematic when the families of the borrowers, who are innocent parties, are also forced to suffer due to the choices made by their loved ones.

Recently, a video went viral on social media showing a house being set on fire by an individual. According to the CCTV footage dated January 18 (Saturday), a man wearing a white shirt, a hat, and a face mask approached the fence of the house. He then stuck a piece of paper on the fence before throwing what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail, causing the house to catch fire. After that, the perpetrator left the scene while filming the fire he had started.According to Kepong Member of Parliament Lim Lip Eng, who shared the video, the fire was set by ah long. It is believed that the individual involved acted to burn down a house in Desa Jaya, Kepong belonging to a couple who are the parents of the borrower. According to a Sinar Harian report, Lim received a complaint regarding the incident at 4.55 pm on Saturday (January 18), the day the incident occurred. Another video uploaded is believed to be part of the recording by the individual who started the fire. However, Lim informed that the couple's son had already passed away, believed to have died after falling from a high floor of a hotel in Johor. Two police reports have been filed, but no statement has been released by the authorities as of this article's writing. The public has taken the opportunity to criticize the government and authorities' efforts in dealing with the problem of illegal moneylenders. Some said that the issue involving ah long has been ongoing for too long without being successfully resolved by the government. 'For years, this has been happening and it is amazing how the government has failed to stop ah long operations and allow innocent people to be in danger,' one commented. Some even questioned the authorities' inability to obtain information from phone numbers, given that citizens need to use their identification cards to register them. Others called for the government to review the issue of granting lending licenses under the 1951 Moneylenders Act, which is currently under the purview of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. Instead, they argued that any form of lending should be overseen by registered institutions under Bank Negara. One social media user even speculated that the individual who started the fire was hired by someone, as he was seen filming the incident, possibly as evidence
