Seattle Children's Hospital may soon have more flexibility about landing helicopters on the rooftop of this building to get critically-ill or injured patients to life-saving medical care.

Seattle Children’s Hospital and community leaders in the Laurelhurst neighborhood said Friday they have reached an agreement supporting efforts to end a longstanding review process governing emergency helicopter landings at the hospital.
The Laurelhurst Community Council will “fully support” the hospital as it seeks city approval to eliminate the Medical Review Committee that has overseen rooftop helicopter landings for decades, The move marks a shift in a dispute rooted in a more than 30-year-old agreement balancing emergency medical access with neighborhood concerns about aircraft noise. This helipad at Graves Field on the University of Washington campus is about a mile or so from Seattle Children's Hospital.
Medical patients brought here are then taken by ambulance to awaiting doctors. “I am grateful that there is a path forward to prioritize the needs of critically ill and acutely injured children,”The issue gained renewed attention after a social media post from a person claiming to be a medical helicopter pilot.
In the post, it was suggested that flight crews sometimes had to decide whether to land directly at the hospital or about a mile away at the University of Washington and transfer patients by ambulance due to neighborhood noise concerns. Seattle Children’s said it handles three or fewer helicopter transports per week and that generally those patients are admitted to intensive care units.
“Every second counts when a child needs lifesaving care, and Seattle Children’s will always put the health and safety of our patients first,” the hospital said in a statement. “Ongoing efforts by some to restrict helipad access put an unnecessary burden on the system.
” Under a conditional use permit established in the early 1990s, helicopters have been guaranteed access to the hospital for life-threatening emergencies, but less urgent cases have often been directed to a helipad at the University of Washington’s Graves Field. A committee made up of medical professionals, city representatives, and community members has reviewed the necessity of each landing.
The Laurelhurst Community Council said it supports helicopter access for children requiring intensive and lifesaving care and emphasized it was not a party to the original permit agreement. The council also said it is committed to participating in discussions with the city and hospital to ensure continued delivery of care while addressing community concerns. Hospital officials say the helipad remains a critical link for patients across Washington and neighboring states, often saving hours compared with ground transport.
