Hungarian gymnast Agnes Keleti, known for her remarkable achievements in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics, passed away at the age of 103. Her story is one of resilience and triumph over adversity, having survived the Holocaust and becoming a celebrated athlete.
Agnes Keleti, a Hungarian Olympic gymnast who won 10 medals, including five golds, died at the age of 103 in Budapest on Thursday. Keleti was hospitalized in critical condition with pneumonia on December 25. She was one of the most successful Jewish Olympic athletes, overcoming the loss of her father and relatives in the Holocaust . Keleti's career was interrupted by World War II and the cancellation of the 1940 and 1944 Olympics.
Forced off her gymnastics team in 1941 because of her Jewish ancestry, she survived the Holocaust by assuming a false identity and working as a maid. Her mother and sister survived with help from famed Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. Keleti made her Olympic debut at the 1952 Helsinki Games at age 31, winning a gold medal in the floor exercise as well as a silver and two bronzes. She then became the most successful athlete at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, winning four gold and two silver medals
