Turns out having grays and a shaved head is surprisingly empowering.

The day before I did it, I was sitting on the exam table at my doctor’s office with my notebook in my lap filled with questions I wanted to ask him, and when I looked down the pages were covered in hair. The next day, I went back to the salon, exactly two weeks after my cute pixie chemo cut, to get it all shaved off.Penelope came in early so I wouldn’t have to be around lots of other customers with my low immunity from chem. Her best friend Mary was also there, and my friend Beth came with me.
So then I was bald. And I didn’t try to cover it up; I didn’t wear wigs, scarves, or caps. The only hat I wore was a winter hat when I went outside to keep warm, and I’d whip it off as soon as I went inside anywhere. Bald, I felt healthy and strong. If I’d tried to cover it up, I thought I would’ve felt like a sick person.Shaving my head was actually a positive turning point for me in my treatment.
