After two failed votes, Jordan’s third attempt to snare the speakership once again ended in failure as he continued to bleed support. Friday’s vote was 194 for Jordan, his lowest tally yet, and 210 cast by the Democrats for Leader Hakeem Jeffries, with two absences on each side. A total of 217 are needed to become speaker.by hard-liners at the beginning of the month. In a statement, Kean said it had become clear that Jordan did not and would not have the support he needed.

Kean, though, added that “it is clear we need a conservative leader to helm the conference in this crucial time.” Citing the “good of our country, my district, and this institution” he voted for McCarthy, who helped him launch his winning campaign for the 7th District seat. Ross Baker, a political science professor at Rutgers University who served as a consultant to the Democratic caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives and senior adviser for several senators, said Kean’s first two votes for Jordan were to ward off challenges from the MAGA wing of the party in his congressional district.

“If you’re in the majority, as the Republicans are, it’s good to be friends with the speaker,” he observed, noting the benefits of committee assignments and support for proposed legislation.
