After an uproar, the American Geophysical Union has backpedaled from actions against scientists who staged a climate protest at their meeting in December.
In December 2022, two scientists took to a stage and interrupted the start of a talk at an American Geophysical Union conference, unfurling a banner urging their colleagues to embrace climate activism. The protest lasted just 32 seconds. As applause and cheers broke out in the audience, event officials pulled the banner from their hands.
“These decisions hope to balance our responsibility to maintain safe spaces for all with AGU’s mission never to stand in the way of knowledge that can propel us forward,” Fiser wrote in the letter. “Safety and security must be paramount when AGU is responsible for over 18,000 people all under one roof at the same time.”
Hicks Pries is pleased the abstracts will be put back, but challenges AGU’s characterization of the scientists’ actions. “Saying a peaceful protest is a safety issue is a page out of an authoritarian playbook,” Hicks Pries says.
