Republican candidate Susan Wright has emerged as the frontrunner in a tight race to replace her late husband.
a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump, Susan Wright, the wife of the late Texas Rep. Ronald Wright who died of coronavirus in February, emerged as the front-runner in the race to replace her husband by securing the top runoff spot in a special election on Saturday. ... [+]With about 19% of the vote, Wright didn’t reach the 50% threshold required to avoid a runoff as she competed with 22 candidates in the free-for-all special election.
However, as of Sunday morning, Wright was the only candidate in the crowded field to secure a spot in the runoff. It appears she will be joined in the runoff by state Rep. Jake Ellzey, a former challenger to her husband who has an endorsement from former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and is currently sitting at about 14% of the vote.
Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez, who has captured 13% of the vote, appears poised to finish in third, disappointing Democrats who hoped shifting demographics could turn the tide in the largely Republican district around Arlington. “Let’s go win this,” Wright tweeted with a gif of Trump giving a thumbs up as the results were tallied on Saturday evening.
