Mark and Jan Lawrance have looked to their twin sons' artwork over the past 11 and a half years to sustain them through grief.

This story explores suicide, including discussion of two men who took their own lives. If you are at risk, please stop here and contact 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for support.

Mark continued:"The curation and how they put together the exhibit was equal to the level of the art."Joe and Will were born May 17, 1985, so identical that the hospital told Jan to paint a dot of red nail polish on Will's toe so the twins' parents and two older sisters could tell them apart. Although both were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and struggled to stay focused in school, those concerns faded away in art classes. At North Central High School, Will and Joe took almost every art class offered and created more works at home. They won a bevy of state and national honors.

Likewise, Joe sculpted faces so realistic that viewers might think they could press a finger into the cheek and feel the skin yield, Ayres said. Among his handcrafted ceramics is a face, mouth open and tilted up, with a cloth draped over it. "When they separated, which we thought would be a good thing their own identities, that's when things started with their mental health," Mark said. Will graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008 and began traveling around the country with a company that installed signs at national retailers like Lowe's.

Will obtained treatment, but it was unsuccessful. His mom remembers her son losing his attention span every 10 to 15 seconds while he helped her with yard work the summer he died. On Sept. 10, 2011, Will shot himself in his southside apartment. When Joe wasn't working, sleeping and drinking provided an escape. He, too, sought substance abuse treatment.

Joe was kicked out of a supportive living program after relapsing. On Oct. 30, 2017, he shot himself in the west-side motel where he'd been staying.
