Voters in Galveston County and across the state voted to eliminate the county treasurer's office, a move pushed by the county's GOP leaders.
Galveston County Treasurer Hank Dugie went to bed Tuesday night believing that he'll be unemployed come 2024. And that's just the way he wants it. 'I think we're in a good place,' Dugie said. 'I delivered on a promise.' After Dugie tucked himself in, it became clear early Wednesday that voters in Galveston County and throughout the rest of Texas indeed had approved a proposal to eliminate the county treasurer's office.
Texas voters pass Props 4 and 9, giving homeowners tax relief and boosting retired teacher pay Dugie, a former League City councilman, won the treasurer's office in 2022 after running a primary campaign against longtime incumbent treasurer Kevin Walsh. Dugie, with the backing of Galveston County Judge Mark Henry and other members of the county's GOP leadership, ran on a proposal to eliminate the office he sought and eventually won.
