Records show California officials cancelled an agreement to give $10 million to San Diego County

Tiny houses and trailers sit ready at the City’s newest tiny homes shelter for homeless Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, in North Sacramento. County officials are again trying to create tiny homes for the homeless in East County, this time in Lemon Grove, weeks after The new project is less than half the size of the earlier effort and should happen regardless of whether the state ends up chipping in.

California officials had backed out of sending over millions of dollars after the Spring Valley plan fell through, though local leaders hope the selection of a new site could reverse that decision. “This is a priority, providing a safe and stable place for our neighbors,” Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe said from the dais. “I believe we’re setting a foundation for which they can regain their footing.”The land was near an elementary school and bordered the backyards of several houses, and some residents said they feared potential conflicts with people who may struggle with mental health or addiction. On Monday, the California Department of General Services wrote local officials to say the “the County has failed to comply with the terms of the Agreement” and “missed deadlines to submit a Plan,” according to a copy of the notice of termination. As a result, San Diego County was no longer eligible for the $10 million — at least under the original deal. The Lemon Grove proposal calls for 70 tiny homes at 2800 Sweetwater Road. Construction should cost around $11.1 million and the county would annually need about $3 million to pay for on-site services, including security, meals and case management. Showers and laundry will also be offered. “We really need it now,” Lemon Grove Councilmember Alysson Snow told the board. “We are desperate to address this issue in our community.” Lemon Grove does not have a shelter for its growing homeless population and several other residents further voiced their support. More than a half-dozen members of the public criticized the plan, though it wasn’t clear how many lived in the city.2 men rescued from sinking boat they just bought in San DiegoHit-and-run crash leaves bicyclist gravely injured in Rancho PeñasquitosEast County school district scrubbed mention of LGBTQ people from its sex-ed curriculum, violating the law, state says
