Johnson said he understands why people, living ‘paycheck to paycheck,’ would be angry when celebrities asking them to donate money ‘already (have) a lot of money.’
ATLANTA, GEORGIA – JANUARY 25: Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey onstage during Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour presented by WW at State Farm Arena on January 25, 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia. Dwayne Johnson acknowledged on Sunday that he, at least, could have handled things better when he and Oprah Winfrey asked their millions of fans to donate to a fund they started to help people impacted by August’s deadly wildfires in Maui.
Johnson, himself worth around $800 million, acknowledged that “money ain’t falling out of the sky, and it’s not growing on trees, and there’s a lot of people out there who’s living paycheck to paycheck. And I get it, and I know what that’s like.” The People’s Fund of Maui promised that it would be used to provide $1,200-a-month to every family affected by the wildfires, the Daily Mail reported. In their video announcement about the fund,“We appreciate all the support that you can give. All these people who were calling me and texting me and messaging me and saying, ‘What do I do? What do I do?’ This is what you do.”
Winfrey clearly expected plaudits for what she thought was a good deed, telling King, “I was so excited and I got up the next morning and I saw all of this vitriol and I was like, ‘Whoa, what happened here?'” Winfrey also said she thought that the $10 million that she and Johnson donated was enough, explaining that if someone gives that amount at a fundraiser, it’s called a “good night.”
