NEW DELHI, India– Days after becoming the first nation to land a craft near the Moon's largely unexplored south pole, India's space agency said on Monday it will launch a satellite to survey the Sun.
People watch as India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates the Indian Space Research Organisation for the successful lunar landing of Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the south pole of the Moon during a live stream of the event at a museum in Kolkata on August 23, 2023. India on August 23, became the first nation to land a craft near the Moon's south pole, a historic triumph for the world's most populous nation and its ambitious, cut-price space programme.
"This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real time," ISRO said. While NASA and the European Space Agency have previously placed orbiters to study the Sun, it will be the first such mission for India. India has a comparatively low-budget space programme but one that has grown considerably in size and momentum since it first sent a probe to orbit the Moon in 2008.
