As June nears its end, the mercury stops at 85.
After 11 consecutive days in D.C. in the 90s or above, some of them unpleasantly humid, a milder side to summer showed itself on Friday, with an afternoon temperature that reached only 85.
As of 5 p.m., in what might have seemed a concession to the stresses of constantly outperforming the norms, the District’s high temperature had fallen four degrees below the 89 degree average high for the 28th of June. Of course, by now, willingly or not, many residents of the city, and the region beyond it, have been undergoing their yearly process of becoming acclimated to the area’s perennial summertime heat.
Nevertheless, it seemed a sort of informal summer holiday from the need to study such measures of discomfort as the heat index. This measures the effect of the joint assaults mounted by heat and humidity on human physiology.Advertisement
