Really, he’s killing it. But, to hear him talk Thursday about his recent mastery of this very difficult game called golf, you’d have thought he was going to flee the Memorial Park grounds in search of a stiff drink, or emergency therapy.
Wise described his Houston start, equaled by Sweden’s Alex Noren and the fast-finishing Tony Finau, who got to stride off the course savoring the 35-foot birdie putt, as an “interesting” round. Although Wise had just spent a lovely bogey-free day in the sun, he insisted, “It wasn’t stress free. I hit a lot of good shots and some bad ones that were frustrating. I have to go clean up some stuff before tomorrow and hopefully play a little more solid.

“A couple of great saves” allowed Wise to avoid a single green number next to his name on the leaderboard, an accomplishment matched by only Tyson Alexander among the top early contenders for the $1,512,000 first prize in the current season’s eighth event. Alexander, also at 5 under, only got through 17 holes before darkness sent him to the clubhouse.
