In 2018, a former teacher went to Puerto Rico to help victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria rebuild. She is still there helping. “There’s a lot more work that’s needed to be done.”
When Hurricanes Irma and Maria pounded Puerto Rico in late 2017, Sherilyn Larkin saw history repeating itself.
“I was drawn to helping the people,” says Ms. Larkin, whose Puerto Rican grandparents saw their livelihood destroyed by two hurricanes in 1899. After those storms, the grandparents moved to Hawaii, where her grandfather found a job in the pineapple industry, and where Ms. Larkin was eventually born.
