Carol-Anne Jones’ death, and the callousness of Brenton Brown’s act on a Victorian road, still haunt her family and friends.
Her mother, Isobel, sprays herself in Jones’ perfume, the scent summoning the memory of her daughter – a memory that includes the horrible circumstances of her death.Her friends keep a seat for Jones when they go out to dinner, wear her shade of lipstick and raise their glasses to toast her.Brenton Brown, on bail and an unlicensed driver, hit Jones’ car on May 2 last year.
Brown on Tuesday pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop, failing to render assistance and other bail and driving offences. “I’m so sorry for your loss and I can only imagine how you all feel,” Brown said in the letter read out by Jonathan Miller, his lawyer.Brenton Brown, in an apology letter to Carol-Anne’s family
Brown had a dysfunctional upbringing, the court heard, and he was exposed to family violence and sexual abuse, and had an extensive criminal history which included driving offences.
