After enduring two years of setbacks and encountering deceitful contractors, the family behind Pho Social is finally on track to open their Vietnamese restaurant in March. The restaurant, located at 333 Broadway, will offer a unique blend of traditional and modern Vietnamese dishes, alongside a full bar featuring innovative cocktails. The journey to opening has not been easy, but the family remains committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming space for the Denver community.

For two years, a sign on the building at 333 Broadway has promised that a new restaurant , Pho Social, is coming soon. The family behind the Vietnamese concept have faced an avalanche of hardships in their efforts to bring their vision to life, but after much perseverance, the restaurant is on track to open its doors in March. Three years ago, Phuong Tran and her husband, Tuan Nguyen, teamed up with her brother, Andy Tran, who runs the successful Pho 777 in Castle Rock.

Soon after, the family bought the building that was most recently a billiards bar called Memphis Cuebar. ' We're both food people, but we don't have restaurant experience,' explains Phuong,'so we thought it would be such a great way to partner with because our love for food and his expertise in the business would be a really great mold together.' While Phuong says her brother is'a little bit more traditional,' she and her husband'are a little more, you know, we like upbeat restaurants. We want it to feel warm, inviting,' which is why they decided to stray from the traditional choice of featuring numbers in the restaurant's name. 'We thought Pho Social would be a really great name because people don't realize that a Vietnamese restaurant could be very social,' Phuong notes.'We want it to be a gathering place, and inclusive.' Building on that mindset, the Pho Social team decided that including a full bar would be another great way to encourage people to linger. It will offer cocktails infused with Vietnamese flavors such as the Vietnamese espresso martini.'If you've ever had Vietnamese coffee, it's very sweet and creamy, just powerful,' Phuong says.'So we put a little twist on it.' Other options will include a lychee martini, a tamarind margarita with a Tajin rim and a summertime watermelon margarita. All cocktails will be available booze-free as well. The food menu, headed up by Andy Tran, will combine classic Vietnamese dishes with some modern twists, all of which draw from family recipes and flavors passed down through generations. Bowls of piping hot pho will be available alongside bánh mì sandwiches and a bánh mì charcuterie board. Pho Social will also serve bún bò huế, a beef and noodle dish from the city of Hue, where the Tran family is originally from. 'Denver is just like a culture of food, but hopefully they come into our restaurant, they try the food and some of the spice or the broth that really just sets us apart from other restaurants,' says Phuong.'These are all family recipes that we're bringing to this community.' Today, the menu is set, construction is almost finished, and the family finally feels like their vision is taking shape — but it's been a long journey to get to this place. In November 2022, Phuong and Nguyen hired a construction company to get renovations underway. The couple was provided with an estimated completion date of May 2023, but they soon noticed that things were moving very slowly with little explanation. Being entirely new to the process, they were unsure of how to proceed and how much leeway to give the contractor.'Once we got close to the timeline, I did my own investigation, because I worked for the city,' explains Phuong.'I found out that he was lying all along. The application was incomplete and the permits were all fake.' The pair were shocked and entirely unprepared to be tricked in a way that drained significant funds and left them uncertain whether any of the work that had been done was safe.'We want to be so inclusive, that includes with our bathroom, adding ramps to the front of the building, having all the entrances be ADA accessible, having the bar being ADA accessible,' shares Phuong.'I want people to feel important.' In the spring of 2023, they tried again.'We hired another company, and this company ended up scamming us as well,' shares Phuong. 'I know people are going to ask us, 'Why didn't you do your research?' We did. This was a trusted person from a recommendation. ... They took advantage of our kindness and our family's kindness to them. So I think that's a lesson learne
