Riley competed for the first time as an On-sponsored athlete in a virtual 5K against 2016 Olympic marathoner Jared Ward this weekend.

Riley was unsponsored and had come back to the sport after a series of challenges, including surgery in 2018 to repair Haglund’s deformity. At age 32, he knew the Trials in Atlanta could be his last opportunity to achieve the Olympic dream.He was in sixth place at mile 20, 40 seconds behind third place and a spot on the team, when Riley started chasing the top group. He caught the pack vying for second and third places at mile 24.
