With the stern look in his eyes of a man determined to take a broom to this mess, franchise co-owner Greg Penner marched Sunday toward the Denver locker room, where clueless coach Nathaniel Hackett would embarrass Broncos Country for the last time.
Black Monday swept into Broncos Country two weeks early.
“We recognize and appreciate this organization’s championship history, and we understand we have not met that standard. Our fans deserve much better, and I can’t say enough about their loyalty during such a challenging stretch for our team. Hackett became the first coach in Broncos history to be fired before his second season and just the fifth full-time NFL head coach to fail to hold his job for an entire year, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Hackett himself called the outing “embarrassing.” Others around the franchise dubbed the performance “a disaster” and “worse than we could have ever imagined.” The team had stayed together despite losing 10 of 12 after a 2-1 start to the season and ranking at or near the bottom in several offensive categories. The rapid demise was stunning given where Hackett and Paton pegged expectations after Hackett’s hire only 11 months ago and the trade for quarterback Russell Wilson weeks later.
Five months to the day later, Hackett was fired because instead of Mile High fireworks, he installed and oversaw one of the worst offenses in the league.
