A new owner of the property and neighbors have rallied around the storied acreage in the wake of what is now Texas’ largest wildfire.

A cow walks across grazing land, much of which was burned by the Smokehouse Creek Fire on March 4, near Canadian, Texas. The fire has burned more than a million acres in the Texas Panhandle, including the Mesa Vista Ranch.furiously tore through the storied property, Kent is still praising the bravery of those working on the property, many of whom are volunteer firefighters. They ran to the fire, not away from it.“They’re heroes to me,” Kent said.

Neighbors quickly arrived at Mesa Vista with water tanks, hay and helping hands. Indiscriminate generosity has been a consistent refrain in the aftermath, and that has stuck with Kent. “We’re all in it together, we’re all suffering, and we’re all trying to help each other the best we can,” he said. The moment things stopped smoking at Mesa Vista, the ranch team began to feed quail, deer and other wildlife that lost their natural habitats. Kent said the feedings will continue until the habitat regrows and allows the creatures to feed themselves again. Luckily, there is no shortage of water at Mesa Vista, as was its design.
