For subscribers: A new $24 million facility is expected to bolster the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner's work tracking and identifying human remains of suspected undocumented migrants along the Arizona-Mexico border.

The number of migrant remains found annually is documented by the dates they were discovered, which could be days, weeks, months or years after the actual day the person died.

"People can have a lot of anxiety about not knowing where family members are if they're missing so we really try to close that loop," said Dr. Gregory Hess, the Pima County chief medical examiner. The deadliness of 2021 is most likely because of heat and drought, among other factors, Hess said.

The new facility will allow the office to consolidate its cold storage space into one, combining the indoor and outdoor cooler that was added adjacent to the building in 2005, Hess said. “We’ve been working toward this for a long time,” Hess said. “It's just a lot of opportunities to better the workflow than what we have, which is kind of cobbled together in our current space.”
